Elles revendiqurent des terres qu'elles avaient achetes mais celles-ci s'avrrent n'exister que sur le papier. De nombreux colons dcidrent de rester malgr leur dsillusion. Ils donnrent la ville qu'ils fondrent le nom d'un juriste et dirigeant politique amricain, John Lansing. La rgion tait encore en grande partie sauvage lorsque Lansing fut choisie, en 1847, comme capitale de l'tat, en remplacement de Dtroit. Au milieu des annes 1880, Ransom E. Olds et Frank G. Clark y fabriqurent leur premier vhicule moteur, qui fut l'origine d'un vaste essor industriel dans toute la rgion. la veille de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'tat du Michigan s'imposa comme le cur de l'industrie automobile amricaine. La grande rcession de 1979-1982 fut particulirement dsastreuse pour la construction automobile rgionale, qui a perdu un tiers de ses emplois. Depuis, les grands tablissements construits Lansing avant ou pendant les annes 1940 ferment leurs portes les uns aprs les autres, laissant d'immenses espaces en friche. Lansing est un vieux centre de production industrielle, spcialis dans l'industrie automobile depuis la fin du sicle.
