Seine Mutter, Antoinette de Louppes de Villeneuve, stammte moglicherweise aus einer Familie von marranes" (haufig unter Zwang zum Christentum konvertierte spanische oder portugiesische Juden), was aber nicht zweifelsfrei belegt ist. Der Vater bekleidete mehrfach hohe Amter in der Stadt Bordeaux: 1530 wurde er als prevot" Chef des Ordnungswesens, 1533 stellvertretender Burgermeister und 1554 Burgermeister.
