Er zahlt in der weltweiten Offentlichkeit zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern des Kampfes gegen soziale Unterdruckung und Rassismus. In den Vereinigten Staaten war er zwischen Mitte der 1950er und Mitte der 1960er Jahren der bekannteste Sprecher der US-amerikanischen Burgerrechtsbewegung (Civil Rights Movement). In dieser Bewegung propagierte er den Zivilen Ungehorsam als Mittel gegen die politische Praxis der Racial Segregation" (Rassentrennung) in den Sudstaaten der USA, und nahm selbst an entsprechenden Aktionen teil. Wesentlich durch Kings Einsatz und Wirkkraft war das Civil Rights Movement zu einer Massenbewegung geworden, und erwirkte letztlich die gesetzliche Aufhebung der Rassentrennung und die Durchsetzung des uneingeschrankten Wahlrechts fur die schwarze Bevolkerung der US-Sudstaaten. Kings Engagement fur soziale Gerechtigkeit fuhrte dazu, dass ihm 1964 der Friedensnobelpreis verliehen wurde. King wurde als Sohn der Lehrerin Alberta Christine Williams King (1904-1974) und des 2. Baptistenpredigers in einer Ebenezer-Gemeinde, Martin Luther King, Sr. (1899-1984), geboren. Sein Vater war vor seiner Tatigkeit als Pfarrer unter anderem Hilfsmechaniker in einer Autowerkstatt und Feuerwehrmann bei einer Eisenbahngesellschaft.
