Zielgruppe der Serie sind die 10- bis 14-Jahrigen. Mit bislang 688 produzierten Folgen in vierzehn Staffeln ist Schloss Einstein als erfolgreichste Serie ein Meilenstein im deutschen Kinderprogramm - weltweit ist sie die langste fiktionale Fernsehserie mit Kindern fur Kinder. Die erste Folge wurde am 4. September 1998 im Kinderkanal (heute KI.KA) ausgestrahlt. Da die Serie ihr eigenes Genre als langlaufende Kinder-Weekly begrundete, lagen noch keine Erfahrungen mit einer solchen Reihe vor. Deshalb wurden zunachst kleinere Einheiten mit 76 geplanten Folgen produziert. Als der Erfolg feststand, ging die ARD zu jahrlichen Fortsetzungen uber und bis Juni 2007 wurden 480 Folgen abgedreht. Mit Beginn der elften Staffel (Folge 481) wurde der Handlungsort nach Erfurt verlegt, die erste Folge der Staffel wurde am 5. Januar 2008 ausgestrahlt.
