Seine Ausbildung hatte er bereits als 14-Jahriger in Venedig begonnen, wo er sich wohl bis gegen 1487 uberwiegend aufhielt. Jakob Fugger war zugleich Kleriker und besass eine Pfrunde, hat jedoch nie in einem Kloster gelebt. Die Grundlage des Familienvermogens wurde vorwiegend durch den Baumwollhandel mit Italien geschaffen.
