Jahrhundert aufgekommene Darstellung der Gewalt des Todes uber das Menschenleben in allegorischen Gruppen, in denen die bildliche Darstellung von Tanz und Tod immer gleichzeitig zu finden ist. Um 1410 entstand in La Chaise-Dieu ein Wandgemalde, das die Thematik des Totentanzes zeigte. Um 1460 entstand der Lubecker Totentanz wohl unter dem Eindruck des schwarzen Todes in der Marienkirche von Lubeck. Dieses teilweise Bernt Notke zugeschriebene Wandgemalde in der so genannten Totentanzkapelle wurde im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstort; zwei von Alfred Mahlau 1955/56 gestaltete Fenster in der Kapelle erinnern heute an dieses untergegangene Kunstwerk. Fragmente von Notkes weiterem Totentanz fur Reval (Tallinn) befinden sich noch heute in der dortigen Nikolaikirche. Ursprunglich bildete der Totentanz den Stoff zu dramatischer Dichtung und szenischer Auffuhrung und wurde in kurzen, meist vierzeiligen Wechselreden zwischen dem Tod und anfangs 24 nach absteigender Rangfolge geordneten Personen verarbeitet. Wahrscheinlich war darin den sieben makkabaischen Brudern mit ihrer Mutter und Eleasar (2.
