Jahrhundert deshalb auch das Jahrhundert Voltaires" (). Als Lyriker, Dramatiker und Epiker schrieb er in erster Linie fur ein Publikum gebildeter Franzosen, als Erzahler und Philosoph fur die gesamte europaische Oberschicht der Zeit, die, gleich ob adeliger oder burgerlicher Herkunft, meist das Franzosische beherrschte. Viele seiner etwa 750 Werke erlebten in rascher Folge mehrere Auflagen und wurden umgehend in andere europaische Sprachen ubertragen. Voltaire, der uber hervorragende Englisch- und Italienischkenntnisse verfugte, veroffentlichte auch in diesen Sprachen einige Texte. Er verbrachte einen betrachtlichen Teil seines Lebens ausserhalb Frankreichs und kannte die Niederlande, England, Deutschland und die Schweiz aus eigener Anschauung. Mit der Kritik an den Missstanden des Absolutismus und der Feudalherrschaft sowie am weltanschaulichen Monopol der katholischen Kirche war er ein wichtiger Wegbereiter der Franzosischen Revolution. Seine Waffen im Kampf fur seine Vorstellungen waren ein immenses Wissen, Phantasie, Einfuhlungsvermogen, ein praziser und allgemein verstandlicher Stil sowie Sarkasmus und Ironie. Francois Marie Arouet alias M. de Voltaire, wie er sich ab 1718 nannte, war das spatgeborene dritte Kind von Francois und Marie Marguerite Arouet, geborene Daumart.
