He then served as the commissioner of the SEC from 1990 to 2002 where he created the Bowl Championship Series. Because of his influence, the Men's and Women's SEC Athlete of the year award is presented annually as the Roy F. Kramer Award. He was replaced by current commissioner, Mike Slive. Before coaching at Central Michigan, he coached high school football for 9 years in Michigan. Kramer was named to the Vanderbilt Athletics Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class.
