Excerpt: FC Emmen is a Dutch football club based in Emmen, Drenthe, and currently playing in the Eerste Divisie, the second tier of football in the Netherlands. FC Emmen was formed on August 21, 1925. When the Dutch professional league was formed in 1954, FC Emmen opted to maintain its amateur club status instead. In 1985, FC Emmen finally joined the professional ranks. The amateur section of the club retained the name FC Emmen, but the professional section used the name BVO Emmen ( Betaald Voetbal Organisatie, professional football organisation). In 2005, the club decided to return to the name FC Emmen, for two reasons.
