Located in the historical region of Moldavia, in the close vicinity of Br ila, Gala i is the largest seaport on Danube. According to the latest official estimates, from 2009, there were 290,733 people living within the city of Gala i, making it the seventh most populous city in Romania. One of the largest economic centers in Romania, Gala i has an economic life developed around the Naval Shipyard, Port River, Arcelor-Mittal steel plant, and Mineral Port. The name of the city appears to have derived from Cuman galat, which was borrowed from the Arabic qal'at (fortress). Other etymologies have been proposed, such as the Serbian galac; however the galat root appears in several nearby toponyms, some of which show clearly a Cuman origin, for example G l ui Lake, which has the typical Cuman -ui suffix for "water."
