About the Book

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 44. Chapters: 2010 Kyrgyzstan Revolution, Battle of Talas, Gokturks, Interhelpo, Iranian Intermezzo, Moghulistan, Osh riots (1990), Postage stamps and postal history of Kyrgyzstan, Saka, Samanids, Semirechye Cossacks, Soviet Central Asia, Toquz Oghuz, Turkestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, United Nations Security Council Resolution 736, Urkun, Wusun, Yenisei Kirghiz, Yuezhi, Zhetysu. Excerpt: The Yuezhi, or Rouzhi (Chinese: pinyin: Yuezh or Rouzh ) were an ancient Indo-European people often identified with the Tokharoi ( ) of Classical sources. They were originally settled in the arid grasslands of the eastern Tarim Basin area, in what is today Xinjiang and western Gansu, in China, before they migrated to Transoxiana, Bactria and then northern South Asia, where one branch of the Yuezhi founded the Kushan Empire. The name is formed from yue ( ) "moon" and shi ( ) "clan." According to the Kangxi Dictionary, it referred to a country beyond China's borders. Since the character can stand for the character rou ( ) in pictograms, it may not mean "moon" here. The character seems to have derived originally from rou, "meat," as a character component. There are numerous theories about the derivation of the name Yuezhi, and none has yet found general acceptance. According to Zhang Guang-da, the name Yuezhi is a transliteration of their own name for themselves, the Visha ("the tribes") or Vesh in modern Pashto meaning "devisions," being called the Vijaya in Tibetan. The Yuezhi are often identified with the Tokharoi ( ), named by Greek historians among the conquerors of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom in the 2nd century BCE. Christopher Beckwith claims that the character, usually read as Old Chinese > Mod., could have been pronounced in an archaic northwestern dialect as *tokwar or *togwar, a form that resembles the Bactrian name To (To war Tu war) and the medieval form To ar To ar. At the beginning of the 20th century, manuscripts were discovered in the northern Tarim Basin written in two hitherto-unknown Indo-European languages dating from the 6th to 8th centuries CE. Believing the authors to be the Tokharoi, Friedrich W. K. Muller called these languages the Tocharian languages. Although few scholars now accept Muller's identification, "Tocharian" remains the standard term for the languages of the Tarim Basin manuscripts and for the peopl
