Excerpt: The Legend of Huma is the first in the Heroes Sextet of Dragonlance novels. It was written by Richard A. Knaak, based on characters and settings from Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles series. Published in 1988, it was the first Dragonlance book not dealing with the original companions. The book narrates the adventures of Huma Dragonbane, a Knight of the Crown, his meeting with Kaz the Minotaur, the discovering of the dragonlances, and the defeat of Takhisis during the Third Dragon Wars. The book opens with Huma and the rest of his unit on patrol through a desolate village. His commander, Rennard, orders the investigation of the nearby woods in reaction to a rumor of goblin activity. The scouting party is divided to flank the goblin encampment, Huma being given command of his group. The goblins spot Rennard's party. Huma decides that an assault from his group is the only way to stave off the slaughter of the others, and charges into the unsuspecting goblins, closely followed by the others under his command. During the fighting Huma's horse is spooked and dashes off in a frenzy, falling over the edge of a cliff. Huma awakes and sets off in search for his comrades.
