Excerpt: HMS Petard was a P-class destroyer of the British Royal Navy that saw service during World War II. Originally to have been named HMS Persistent, she was built by Vickers-Armstrongs and launched 27 March 1941. She initially carried the pennant number G.56, changed after the war to D.56. Petard had the distinction of sinking a submarine from each of the three Axis navies: the German U-559, Japanese I-27 and the Italian Uarsciek. On 30 October 1942 she was involved in the sinking of U-559 and the consequent recovery of materials assisted the decoding of the German Enigma cypher, albeit at the cost of the lives of her First Lieut. Anthony Fasson and Able Seaman Colin Grazier, both of whom were drowned when the U-boat sank with them inside. Four days later, she was damaged by bombing while at Benghazi, and put out of action for a month. While escorting Convoy KR-8 on 12 February 1944, Petard (Cdr Rupert Egan) destroyed the Japanese B1 type submarine I-27 after it had sunk SS Khedive Ismail with the loss of 1,297 people. Following the close of the War, the Petard returned home and was place in Reserve at Harwich in September 1946, ...More: http: //booksllc.net/?id=82722
