Excerpt: A roundabout is a type of circular junction that was developed by the UK's Transport Research Laboratory in the mid twentieth century, in which road traffic must travel in one direction around a central island and priority is given to the circulating flow. Signs usually direct traffic entering the circle to slow down and give the right of way.
