In the August of 2008, the 142 year-old municipality was made Vellore City Municipal Corporation. The Vellore city corporation, at 87.915 square kilometres (33.944 sq mi), is one of the largest in Tamil Nadu. It is considered one of the oldest cities in South India and lies on the banks of the Palar river on the site of Vellore Fort.
