Created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang, the character first appeared in Detective Comics #140 (1948). The character has appeared in many Batman media. In live action, he was portrayed by Frank Gorshin and John Astin in the 1960s television series, as well as by Jim Carrey in the 1995 film Batman Forever.
