Excerpt: The Captain class were 78 frigates of the Royal Navy, constructed in the United States, launched in 1942-1943 and delivered to the United Kingdom under the provisions of Lend-Lease. They served in World War II as convoy escorts, anti-submarine warfare vessels and coastal forces control frigates. They were drawn from two classes of destroyer escort; 32 from the Evarts class and 46 from the Buckley class. Post-war nearly all the surviving Captain class ships were returned to the US Navy as quickly as possible to reduce the amount payable under the provisions of the Lend-Lease agreement.
