About the Book

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 25. Chapters: Afar people, Eritrean Jews, Jews and Judaism in Eritrea, Habesha people, Tigray-Tigrinya people, Italian Eritreans, Afar Region, Afar language, Sultanate of Dewe, Beja people, Dobe'a, Operation Magic Carpet, Tigre people, Jeberti people, Kunama people, Saho people, Aussa Sultanate, Mudaito dynasty, Bilen people, Rashaida people, History of the Jews in Eritrea, Nara people, Hedareb people, Beni-Amer. Excerpt: The term Habesha (Ge'ez: ababa, Amharic (H) be, Tigrinya: be; Arabic: al- aba ah) refers to the South Semitic-speaking group of people whose cultural, linguistic, and in certain cases, ancestral origins trace back to those people who ruled the Axumite Empire and the kingdom known as D MT (usually vocalized Di amat). Peoples referred to as "Habesha" today include the Amhara and Tigray-Tigrinya ethnic groups of Ethiopia and Eritrea, who are predominantly Oriental Christians and have been since AD 332. The Amhara and Tigray ethnicities combined make up about 36% of Ethiopia's population (ca. 23 million Amhara, 4.5 million Tigray), while the Tigray make up about half of Eritrea's population (ca. 2.25 of 4.5 million). A broader definition of this term also includes segments of the Semitic-speaking Gurage peoples in the southwest and the Harari peoples in the east and southeast because of their strong historical links to the Amhara and Tigray. In the broadest sense, the word Habesha may refer to anyone from Ethiopia or Eritrea, although some would exclude themselves from this association. The modern term derives from the vocalized Ge'ez: aba, first written with a script that did not mark vowels as B or in "pseudo-Sabaic as B TM." The earliest known use of the term dates to the second or third century AD South Arabian inscription recounting the defeat of the Aksumite Neg s ("king") GDRT of Aksum and B...
