Not illustrated. 1921 Excerpt: ...Commission of North Carolina, newly organized and enlarged, with an enlarged force, has ordered the immediate construction of 482 miles of roads, to cost over seven million dollars. Work is already under way on some of it, and the remainder will be put under construction just as fast as the ofiices of the commission can let the contracts. It is hoped to have much of the construction completed and the roads put into service before the end of the Summer. Every district in the State, and almost every county in the State, is included in the list oflprojects approved for immediate construction. Altogether the commission has approved the building of more than eighteen million dollars' worth of roads, with a total length of more than one thousand miles, since reorganization was effected following new road legislation by the last General Assembly_. As nearly as possible construction will proceed simultaneously in each of the nine road districts, with an equalized distribution of State money. Many of the counties of the State will also get additional road building by loaning the State commission money to build roads in their own borders, one of these roads being the Charlotte-Statesville road, 43 miles long, which will be hardsurfaced at an approximate cost of $1,290,000. The counties are advancing this money so as to get early road construction. Nearly all the counties are also building roads of their own, not included in the State system, this construction amounting to several million dollars-this year. The eastern section of the State will get its roads much cheaper than the western section on account of grading costs and availability of material.
