It is the headquarters of the Tirunelveli District. And is the sixth-largest city in Tamil Nadu, after Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, and Salem. It is situated 612 kilometres (380 mi) southwest of Chennai and 140 kilometres (87 mi) east of Thiruvananthapuram.
