Excerpt: Thomas John "Tom" Pope (born 27 August 1985) is a professional English footballer who plays as a striker for League Two side Port Vale. Released from the Crewe Alexandra youth set-up, after impressing a non-league Biddulph Victoria he won a professional contract at Crewe in 2005. After loan spells at Lancaster City, Stafford Rangers, and Barrow, he became the club's top-scorer with 2008-09. He became Rotherham United's joint-record signing in summer 2009 when he made a 150,000 move to the Yorkshire club. Loaned out to Port Vale in summer 2011, he made the move permanent later in the year. A 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) striker, he has a natural advantage in the air. Pope was a part of Crewe Alexandra's highly acclaimed youth set-up, but was not offered a professional contract with the club.
