He played in Major League Baseball as a first baseman for the Chicago White Sox, Washington Senators and Boston Braves. Shires was a colorful personality with a penchant for self-praise, earning himself the nickname, Arthur The Great Shires. Shires began his professional baseball career in 1926 at the age of 19 with the Waco Cubs of the Texas League. In 1928 he had a .387 batting average with 11 home runs in 108 games for Waco and, on July 31, his contract was purchased by the Chicago White Sox.
