Hammerschmidt-Hummel studied English and American Literature, Ancient, Medieval, and Modern History as well as Political Science at the University of Marburg from 1967 to 1972. In 1970, she became a member of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German National Merit Foundation). She received her PhD in English Literature at the University of Marburg (Germany) in 1972. In 1974, she was awarded a scholarship by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) for two and a half years to prepare her Habilitationsschrift (post-docterate dissertation).
