Excerpt: Gortin' (Irish: , meaning small field) is a village in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is situated ten miles (16 km) north of Omagh in the valley of the Owenkillew River, overlooked by the Sperrin Mountains. It had a population of 360 people according to the 2001 Census. At one point it boasted nine pubs. The village is heavily dependent on agriculture for its economy, but the village is also trying to develop its tourism potential. Gortin is situated within the Omagh District Council area. The village of Gortin is situated between Newtownstewart and Cookstown, and between Omagh and Plumbridge. Its population up to 20 years ago was about 315 persons, but at present it is about 400.
