What a pleasant dream! What a rough awakening! Philip was still dreaming the dream, and he was searching for the angel which most men seek, and seek in vain amongst women. The less sanguine set their hopes upon some sterling merit, or upon gold. They attain their object. They do not adore their wives, neither are they worshipped; there is no scandal, no divorce court, no short-lived ecstatic love, no ideal life; but comfort and content are to be found in their peaceful homes, when the ecstatic love has long faded away in the remote past, when the ideal life has been found hollow and imaginary, and when the poet's heart is broken. He lives certainly, but his life is in the past, the present has no claim upon him, he no claim upon the present. Upon the past alone his intellect dwells, all that is left of it, for it has emerged from the catastrophe a huge, battered, shapeless mass. Perhaps the idealist takes to drink, perhaps he writes--for a future and a kinder generation. The boat duly reached Calais; Philip had to part with his gay little friend, Mr. Canning recovered sufficiently to call for brandy-andwater, and Mrs. Canning made herself look as neat and pretty as she could to go on shore, succeeding pretty well considering her age.
