Excerpt: ... house is owned by a company, London. incorporated in 1894, under the name of "Rowton Rowton Houses, Limited," and is the third of a series built by the company. The first, situated at Vauxhall, opened in 1893, nas 477 cubicles; the second, at King's Cross Road, opened in 1895, has 676 cubicles; and this, the third, has 804 cubicles. In addition to these, plans have been prepared and work is in progress for a fourth at Hammersmith, with 796 cubicles, and this is expected to be opened about September, 1899. Land has also been acquired for two more lodging 'houses at Whitechapel and Lissom Grove respectively. The site of the Newington Butts lodging house has a frontage to a public recreation ground of 214 feet, and is 138 feet from front to back, with a superficial area of 27,850 feet. The building has been set back a distance 01 10 feet from the forecourt line in front, and is planned with wide areas around the other sides of the site and large inner court-yards to procure an abundance of light and air to the basement and ground floor; the upper or cubicle floors are planned in the form of an elongated, with staircases at the two extremities, the inner court-yard being 58 feet wide and open to the south-east for access of sunlight to all the cubicles and rooms. House. London. The building is lighted throughout by gas, and Rowton so arranged that the official on each cubicle floor has control of the gas upon that floor. The building is divided for administrative purposes into five sections: --1. Superintendent's apartment, with separate accommodation for the office clerk. 2. Bed-makers. 3.
