Het is, als verneemt men in de Openbaring den weergalm van het: "Gij adderenteeltI De bijl ligt alreede aan den wortel der boomen!" Maar boven het Evangelie (en wij sluiten er de Brieven bij in) zouden wij, met Herder, de woorden willen stellen: "Een Engel heeft het geschreven" (bl. 69). In de derde plaats komt hier in aanmerking het verschil van leerstellig standpunt in de Johanneische schriften, en, daar dit wel het hoofdzakelijke is, waarop de bestrijders der identiteit van hunne schrijvers zich beroepen, zoo wordt daaraan te regt ook door Dr. Niermeijer dubbele opmerkzaamheid gewijd. Naar zijn oordeel behoort er de stoutste miskenning der waarheid toe, om hier, met Ebrard, in plaats van verschil, de meest mogelijke eenheid en overeenstemming te zien, ofschoon het ook van den anderen kant niet geloochend kan worden, dat eene te materiele opvatting van den inhoud der Openbaring, en eene te spirituele van dien des 4den Evangelies, bij mannen als Baur en de zijnen, tot eene scheeve, overdreven voorstelling der wederzijdsche afwijking geleid heeft. Beide partijen, zoowel zij, die alleen de echtheid van het Evangelie, als zij, die, met ontkenning daarvan, de authentie der Openbaring verdedigen, plegen zich hier op het oordeel van Lucke te beroepen. Volgens dezen is het gronddenkbeeld, gelijk ook de hoofdinhoud der Openbaring, de Parousie of wederverschijning van Christus, ter voleindiging van zijn rijk op aarde en ten gerigte....
