Excerpt: ... than Tight, something more sacred than religious belief, something more important than the educational interests of our young men, --and that something is the predominance of the Church. I cannot charge Dr. Pusey with inconsistency; his arguments against a Theological School in 1853 were probably dictated by the same spirit as his arguments in favour of one in 1869, The predominance of the Church was and is his Alpha and Omega. If the Church could not rule over the whole University, let it at all events have one School in which it could reign supreme. It may possibly occur to some that there is a certain resemblance between the conduct of the Professor and that of Samuel, who after painting vividly the evils of monarchy was instrumental in appointing a king. But I scarcely think that the most ardent admirers of Dr. Pusey will maintain that the account given of the conduct of the ancient seer will fit the case of the Oxford Professor; or are we to make the clerical diplomacy of the nineteenth century do duty for the inspiration of old? Some light may perhaps be thrown on the matter by an extension of the following criticism of the Professor: 'Of a truth this age has Holy Scripture much in its mouth, when it does not interfere with some idol of its own; but is ever ready to offer it in sacrifice to its idol, if it does.' (Evidence 100.) On the 27th May 1869 the statute establishing a School of Theology received the assent of Convocation. Care was of course taken to include in the subjects of the examination those to teach which had been declared to be 'mere charlatanism.'
