And when he assumes to do anything else, he is talking bosh, nonsense, absolute nonsense. The people are represented here, Mr. Chairman, by intelligent, fair-minded agents, picked forthe purpose, and sworn to the discharge of their duties faithfully, and those representatives are the members of the New Hampshire legislature, including this railroad committee. You, Mr. Chairman, and you, gentlemen, are the representatives of the people, and you are to try this case; and if the New Hampshire railroads, a portion of which I represent, have not a good case, and cannot give substantial and honest reasons why the legislation they ask for should be granted, then I take it that you who are the jury will find a verdict against my clients. You ought to, because you are here specially to see that neither railroads, nor any other corporations nor class of people nor class of interests, get at your hands any legislation that is not for the full benefit of everybody. Now, what is the case, Mr. Chairman? Let us see! I am in favor of the main provisions of the Colby bill. When I say that, I do not exactly know the condition of the Colby bill in all particulars.
