About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1889 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV. The Patent Log. Patent logs may be divided broadly into two classes, taffrail and towing logs; the former being the most favoured, as they register on the rail and are easily seen; but the latter being the most accurate, although towing as they do at the end of a long line, which has to be hauled in to get at the register, are more trouble to work with. Taffrail logs are excellent things so long as the weather is fine, or no change in the existing weather takes place: but a strong wind on either side, blowing the line out of the water, a difference in the draft of the ship, a difference in the set of the sea, or the neglect of the person detailed to oil it, have all their separate effect upon it, and nullify its usefulness. These errors can be corrected to some degree by the use of an adjustable rotator, patented by the Avriter, since sold to Messrs. Walker, Birmingham. In this the blades were put on with an excess of pitch, so that the rotator revolved faster than was necessary. This excessive motion was checked to the requisite degree by two wings or brakes situated in the after- part of the body of the rotator, which screwed in or out, and by opposing their flat surfaces to the water retarded the motion of the rotator to the requisite degree. The total difference of revolution between brakes right in and right out amounted to over twenty per cent., which gave ample scope for adjustment. Very good results can be got from this, sufficient for all practical purposes, yet for absolute accuracy and steady going under all circumstances of weather, there is not a log in the market which can touch Walker's A 1 Harpoon; and the writer is entitled to speak with some degree of weight on this point, having...
