ABERDEEN PUBLIC LIBRARY: Gift of 6,000 from Mr. Carnegie.--For a considerable time past the Free Library Committee have had before them the question of a new and enlarged central reading-room at Schoolhill, to take the place of the present room downstairs, which has now become overcrowded. At the same time there has been frequently under discussion the matter of other two branch reading-rooms, one at Torry, for which a site has already been procured at the junction of Victoria and Grampian Roads, and one for Ruthrieston and Ferryhill districts, to be placed probably somewhere in Holburn Street. Estimates having been obtained for the central reading-room from Messrs. Brown & Watt, amounting to 4,000, and the two branches being estimated to cost 1,000 each, and these sums being more than the committee could face at least for some years to come, the Lord Provost, who was present in August last when these matters were under discussion, suggested that he might be allowed to write Mr. Carnegie and lay the matter before him. This was agreed to, and his lordship having early in October last written Mr. Carnegie fully on the subject, and supplied him with various statistics as to the population of the city, the number of library readers, etc., has since received a letter agreeing to supply the sum necessary for the three reading-rooms--namely, 6,000. This intimation will give much satisfaction to the community generally.
