Archbishop Kenrick well knows, that the present form of Episcopal Consecration in the Roman Pontifical, that which is alone connected with any imposition of hands, is not ancient, he tells us so himself at page 193, on the authority of Father Morinus, in whose time it was not more than four hundred years old. Now, we suppose, that he will hardly contend that the change then made by the Church of Rome is a satisfactory proof, that her old forms were insufficient, and all her bishops, for a thousand years, unconsecrated. The cases are exactly parallel. Even if the Convocation of 1662, had been ignorant enough to suppose that the old forms were insufficient, that would not have made them so; and we have abundantly shewn, and that by the authority of the Romish Church herself, that they were sufficient, since they contained all that the Roman forms do. Archbishop Kenrick, however, devotes two or three pages to the proof of this fourth proposition. We choose to state the exact change, of which he is speaking, in his own words and manner. "Certain it is," says he, " that the Convocation CHanGED the form which had been used for upwards of one hundred years; and that he change, especially in regard to the episcopal consecration, was precisely such as might be deemed sufficient to supply the defect charged upon it. This is seen by comparing the forms of Edward VI., with those adopted by the Convocation in 1662. The italics mark the additions now made to the original form.
