While he dropped into the heavy slumber that follows powerful excitement, she saw the morning sun break into the chamber. "This," thought she, "used to be his usual hour of going to his work. How have I stood at the door to look after him, as his feet brushed the dew from the grass, and the birds were singing from every branch! I thought how many hours must pass before he returned to me again, and I was sorrowful; but when he got to the last bend of the field, and turned round to see if I was looking at him, and waved his hat to me so cheerfully, my spirits came back, and I used to think of preparing for his return something nice for his supper.
