He fought, as he believed, in a just and righteous cause, and trusted in the God of battles more than in armies. Singled out early by the king himself as a man of business and activity, who could acquit himself well in high command, he failed to secure the confidence of some of the factious leaders of the king's council, and was constrained to relinquish the command of the troops which he had himself raised. Notwithstanding this indignity, some of his military achievements in Lancashire gained him the respect even of his enemies, and were amply sufficient to show that with longer experience he would have become eminent amongst the great captains of his time. His attacks, especially at Bolton and Wigan, were characterized by a daring in conception and a skill in execution which might have been expected to insure their success; and if the first was a great trinmph, the last was hardly a signal failure.
