Her vivacity was by no means unfuitable to her years; but her aunt was very attentive to check the flow of it, by affuring her that fhe would be too boifterous for a woman of fafhion. The good lady's arguments in favour, or to the difadvantageof any part of Leonora's conduct, all ended in defcribing its approach to, or deviation from, her favourite character. The ac-com-complifhments of her fex, which the carelefs levity of youth ufed fometimes to neglect, were not reprefented to her as neceffary to the ornament or comfort of her life, but urged merely as theeflential accompaniments of the fafhionable cha-racter; as no one could figure, with propriety, in fafhionable circles, or even gain a welcome admiffion into them, who did not pofTefs the paffport of elegant education.
