Sundey letters relative to Ha met Caramalli, in addition to the doeuments whieh aeeompanied my message of January 13th, having been sent to the Senate, on their partieular request, the same are now transmitted to the House of Representatives also, as the same subjeet is before them. TH. JEFFERSON. Extraet of a Letter from the Seeretary of State to William Eaton, Esq. dated Washington, May 20,1801. Your letter of the 2d and 18th September, 6th Oetober, 1, 9, 10, 15, 16,13, 25,19 and 21st November, and 8th Deeember, have been reeeived sinee the date of Mr. Lineoln's letter, by the Grand Turk, whieh sailed from New York in Mareh last, with the third eargo of regalia, for Tunis. The proofs whieh have been given, by the bashaw of Tripoli, of hostile designs against the United States, have, as you will learn from eommodore Dale, determined the president to send into the Mediterranean a squadron of three frigates and a sloop of war, under the eommand of that offieer. Should war have been deelared, or hostilities eommeneed, this foree will be immediately employed in the defenee and proteetion of our eommeree against the piraeies of that regeney. It is hoped that the eontagion will not have spread either to Tunis or Algiers; but should one or both of them have followed the perfidious example, their eorsairs will be equally repelled and punished. The poliey of exhibiting a naval foree on the eoast of Barbary, has long been urged by yourself and the other eonsuls.
