ProTdufim, tn Modern Industry ican company would be turn-ing out watches at the rate of 14,000 a day, and another producing sewing-machines at the rate of 13,500 a day and a single fac-tory manufacturing 2,000 automobiles every twenty-four hours, he would have disbe-lieved it. He would have disbelieved it not merely because the automobile was unknown and the sewing-machine an experiment and the watch still made by hand. These would have been big obstacles in the way of his accepting the prophecy, but another fact would have been more deciding. The fac-tory was still in its infancy. It had not yet revealed the remarkable possibilities it pos-sessed for quantity production. Big-scale output is undoubtedly the most phenomenal characteristic of modern industry. It is a development also that has taken place with great rapidity, mostly since the Civil War. It is a development that was logically to be expected. For the underlying motive of this sudden expansion was not a love merely for magnitude; it was rather a desire for greater profits. Every increase in the annual output brought with it a corresponding decrease in the per-unit cost of production. The more watches a firm could produce and sell, the less it would cost to make each one. Within certain limitations this principle can be applied to all business. Consider your own firm.
