Extrait: ...fait contre lui un grand usage. Il est clair qu'en ecrivant ces lignes, Madame de Custine etait de bien mauvaise humeur. Entre Delphine et Rene que s'etait-il donc passe? Il serait curieux de reproduire une de ces scenes qui troublaient de temps a autre leur intimite; quelques lignes de chacun d'eux nous rend la tache facile: L'une se plaignait sans cesse, eclatait en jalousies et en reproches, s'emportait, pleurait, puis se mettait a bouder; L'autre, Rene, peu patient de sa nature, prenait ses airs sombres, rappelait son amie au sens commun, menacait d'une rupture et partait. Mais toute cette colere ne durait pas, et quelque billet, laconique comme celui-ci, servait de preambule a une prompte reconciliation: A demain, Grognon, A Madame de Custine. Dans l'intervalle, Madame de Custine avait trouve le temps d'epancher dans quelque lettre ses larmes et ses fureurs, contre un bourreau qui la rendait plus malheureuse que jamais et dont aussi plus que jamais elle etait folle. Il ne faut pas prendre au tragique, comme l'ont fait les biographes, ces querelles passageres, legers orages du printemps, qui chez l'une n'eteignaient pas l'amour et qui laissaient subsister chez l'autre une durable amitie. Ce court billet ne porte ni date ni adresse; une date etait inutile: Chateaubriand ne l'ecrivait pas pour la posterite, et quant a l'adresse, la femme de chambre qui devait le remettre a sa maitresse n'en avait pas besoin. Mais quel est ce signe mysterieux, cette etoile, qu'on y remarque et que Rene n'a reproduit nulle part dans sa correspondance?... Voici un autre billet, sans date, qui doit se placer a peu pres a l'epoque ou nous sommes arrives, c'est-a-dire avant que Madame de Custine quittat le quartier de la rue Miromesnil: A Madame de Custine, rue de Miromesnil, 19, Place Beauveau.
