Er steht im Schutz der Gotenkonigin. Verblufft wichen die Trossknechte zuruck. So? rief nach einer Pause der mit dem Dolch, straflos soll er ausgehn, der Hund und Sohn eines Hundes? und funf von uns liegen am Boden halbtot? und ich habe fortan drei Zahne zu wenig? Und keine Strafe? Er ist gestraft genug, sagte Mataswintha, auf die tiefe Dolchwunde am Halse deutend. Und all das um einen Wurm, schrie ein zweiter, um eine Schlange, die aus seinem Ranzen schlupfte und die wir mit Steinen warfen. - Da seht! er hat die Natter geborgen, da, an seiner Brust. Nehmt sie ihm. Schlagt ihn tot, schrien die andern. Aber da kamen zahlreiche Gotenkrieger heran und schafften ihrer Konigin Gehorsam, die Italier unsanft zuruckstossend und einen Kreis um den Gefallnen schliessend. Aspa blickte scharf zu und plotzlich sank sie mit gekreuzten Armen neben dem Gaukler nieder. Was ist dir, Aspa? steh auf! sprach Mataswintha pg 210 staunend. O Herrin! stammelte diese, der Mann ist kein Gallier! Er ist ein Sohn meines Volkes. Er betet zu dem Schlangengott! Sieh hier seine braune Haut unter dem Halse. Braun wie Aspa, - und hier - hier, eine Schrift; Schriftzeichen eingeritzt uber seiner Brust: die heilige Geheimschrift meiner Heimat, jubelte sie. Und, mit dem Finger deutend, hob sie an zu lesen. Der Gaukler scheint verdachtig. - Warum diese Verstellung? sprach Mataswintha. Man muss ihn in Haft nehmen. Nein, nein, o Herrin, flusterte Aspa. Weisst du, wie die Inschrift lautet? - Kein Auge als meines kann sie dir deuten. - Nun? fragte Mataswintha
