So mancher, der von seiner Genialitat bisher keine Ahnung gehabt hat, wird dies schmunzelnd zur Kenntnis nehmen! Die absolute Bedeutungslosigkeit der Frauen wird durch Aufzahlung verschiedener Berufe erhartet, in denen die Frauen nichts geleistet hatten, ohne dass mit einer Silbe daran geruhrt wird, ob sie wohl die historische Moglichkeit dazu hatten oder nicht. Dass sie in der Musikgeschichte, in der Architektur, in der Plastik und Philosophie nicht das Geringste geleistet hatten, wird ihnen vorgehalten, in einem Atem wird aber gleich darauf eingestanden, der weibliche Baumeister sei eine fast nur Mitleid weckende Vorstellung. Dass diese Vorstellung und andere ahnliche jahrhundertelang uberhaupt einen Wall bildeten, der alles weibliche Streben von solchen Richtungen ablenkte, wird naturlich nicht gesagt; auch nicht, dass, seit in diesen Wall durch den Ansturm der Frauenbewegung einige Breschen geschlagen wurden, sehr tuchtige und bemerkenswerte weibliche Leistungen sowohl in der Architektur (man denke an die nach dem Leben gezeichnete Figur der Ursine in Reickes beruhmtem Roman: Das grune Huhn) als besonders in der Plastik zu verzeichnen sind: Sondererscheinungen naturlich, aber die geringe Zahl erklart sich doch klar genug daraus, dass es ja eine selbstverstandliche Erziehung jedes Madchens zu einem Berufe noch nicht gibt, daher der Prozentsatz, der sich trotz des Mangels an Forderung und Antreibung aus eigener Kraft zu einem Berufe schwieriger wissenschaftlicher oder kunstlerischer Natur durchringt, doch naturgemass ein weit geringerer sein muss, als die Anzahl der Manner, die alle zur Berufswahl verhalten werden. Dass die Frauen in der Philosophie nichts geleistet hatten, ist unrichtig, nur gestatteten ihnen die Zeitverhaltnisse meistens nicht, dozierend oder publizierend vor die Offentlichkeit zu treten; im Mitte
