Hart gefroren ist es noch nicht; man uberschreitet es, als ware man leicht gewiegt. Gross und grau lauft Jachls Schatten neben ihm dahin. Eine Eichkatze springt uber den Weg. Ehe er es noch richtig merkt, trabt er zwischen grossen Flocken weiter. Der erste Schnee! Rasch, immer rascher fallt er herab. Nach einer Viertelstunde hat er jedem Baum und jedem Busch und jedem Hugel ein funkelnagelneues Gewand angezogen. S. 67 Gar nicht zum Wiedererkennen sind sie. Jachl lacht. Breit und dick geworden sind alle miteinander. Ganz putzig sehen sie aus, Baume beinah wie Berge.-- Kein Schritt des einsamen Wanderers schallt mehr in die Weite hinein; nur seine Fusstapfen sind zu sehen; zu horen ist nichts von Jachl. -- Vor einem kleinen Sumpf bleibt er einen Augenblick stehen. Wie braunes Bier, denkt er und schuttelt sich. Bier und Branntwein sind noch nicht aus Jachls Kopf heraus. Keinen Tropfen bringt er so rasch wieder uber die Lippen. Das nimmt er sich vor. In der weissen Stille ist sein Schnuckenstall schwer zu finden. Verschwunden scheint er zu sein, fortgehext. So genau der Schafer auch Weg und Steg kennt, in dieser Nacht geht er in der Irre. Alles ist weiss; alles hat Form und Farben verandert. Vorsichtig tastet Jachl von einem Baum zum andern. Jetzt aber greift er ins Leere. Seine Hand fasst nur Luft. Er uberlegt: Stehenzubleiben ist das Klugste. Und abzuwarten. Das Wetter hat sich ja immer wieder geandert, wird es auch in dieser Nacht. Wenn nicht in der Nacht, so doch am Morgen oder am Vormittage. Nur Geduld muss einer haben, dann kann ihm hierbei nichts passieren.-- Jachl weiss nicht, ist's der weiche Schnee, der nachgibt oder ist das Moor auf diesem Fleck noch so wei
