During the winter of 1855, the ruins were covered with frozen spray, and its appearance was pretty in the extreme. The town was made a CINQUE PORT in the year 1229, but continual disputes arose between the people of Deal and Sandwich owing to the former having to go to the latter for justice of every kind. The Borough was governed by a deputy and assistants, and continued to be so till the reign of William Hi," who, on the townspeople rising, granted them a Charter by which they became independent of Sandwich, in spite of the opposition held forth by the Mayor of that town. This Charter dates from the year 1689, and the local government of Deal now consists of a Mayor and Corporation, Recorder, Town Clerk, &c, &c. _ THE CHURCH OF ST. LEONARD is situated in Upper DealIt is a good building, with a square tower, upon which is a cupola with a vane and bishop's mitre. In 1684 the tower was re-built, and in 1819 the edifice underwent restoration, and some years later the chancel was repaired and new windows inserted. There are many objects of antiquity still visible within its walls, and among the foremost are a Norman piseina and early English sedilia. The east window represents "The Ascension of our Lord." A brass plate, erected in memory of T. Boys, Esq., who was with " The Great Harry," at the seige of Boulogne, is to be seen within the Church. ST. GEORGE'S CHURCH is in Lower-street. It was erected in the reign of Anne, as a chapel-of-ease, and was consecrated in 1716 by Archbishop Wake. The chief object in the Church is the monument erected to the memory of Commander D.
