Il est considr comme l'un des fondateurs de la philosophie moderne: il thorise le cogito, fondant ainsi le systme des sciences sur le sujet connaissant face au monde qu'il se reprsente. En physique, il est considr comme le fondateur du mcanisme, et en mathmatiques, de la gomtrie analytique. Toutefois, certaines de ses thories ont par la suite t contestes (thorie de l'animal-machine) ou abandonnes (thorie des tourbillons ou des esprits-animaux). Sa pense a pu tre rapproche de la peinture de Nicolas Poussin pour son caractre clair et ordonn. Sa mthode philosophique et scientifique, expose partir de 1628 dans les Rgles pour la direction de l'esprit, puis dans le Discours de la mthode en 1637, affirme constamment une rupture par rapport la scolastique enseigne dans l'Universit. Elle se caractrise par sa simplicit (Descartes la rsume en peu de rgles, quatre en tout dans le Discours de la mthode) et prtend rompre avec les interminables raisonnements scolastiques. Elle prend pour modle la mthode mathmatique, cherchant remplacer la syllogistique aristotlicienne utilise pendant tout le Moyen ge.
