According to this Scheme then all Confessions of Faith ought to run in this general Form, I Believe The Scrip J Tures To Be The Word Of God j or else (if you will be particular) they ought to be drawn up in Scripture Terms only; and this latter is the Method which is now contended for.. But as with respect: to the former Case I have before shewn it to be inconsistent with the End and Design of the Ministerial Office, so with respect to this it appears, I think, by the Principles just now laid down, to be inconsistent with the very Nature of visible Communion. Visible Communion (as has been, shewn) implies a visible Agreement in the Faith. Vifble Communion therefore can sub-- fist no longer than there is among Christians, a joint Concurrence in such solemn and publics; Afts as do visibly express or signify this Agreement. Forasmuch then as this Agreement cannot be visibly expressed or signified any Otherwise than by a joint Use of, or a mutual Agreement in the same publick Forms of Confession, the Consequence must be, that if these Forms be of such a sort, as that an Agreement in the Use of them does not visibly imply an Agreement in Faith, there will not then (notwithstanding the joint Use of such Forms J be any z////e Communion.
