About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1918 Excerpt: ... custom on the general farm is to keep hens which have out-lived their usefulness as far as laying is concerned. Since the general practice is to keep too many old hens, it was decided to determine by the experiment the number of eggs a hen will lay during successive years of her life and during what season these eggs are produced, in order to determine the advisability of keeping hens of different ages and to determine when it is most profitable to sell the surplus stock.. THE EXPERIMENT Eight pens of seven different varieties containing ninety hens were retained from the First and Second Arkansas State Egg Laying Contests. The birds were placed in separate pens and trap-nested. All were fed and cared fo...
