Searing instead of cutting has now been going on for some little time, and I know enough about it to recommend its adoption (in the case of the small farmer, at_ any rate), but the greatest care must be exercised to avoid scorching the hinder parts of the lamb. A very useful searing table is shown on page 97, with barrier, which effectively protects the lamb from injury by the hot irons. Science has taught the value of disinfectants, and where the knife and ear clipper are used, this teaching can be well applied by the simple method of disinfecting all tools used in some antiseptic solution. A 5 % solution of ordinary washing soda. used hot, will sufficiently disinfect knives or other tools used. As a further safeguard against blood poisoning the knife usedhad better be non-closing, the blade so well fitted as to leave no openings in which impurities can collect. The instruments should be dipped after every few operations. Searing is done at B or A, lamb being offered at back of cross; operator, standing facing table, pulls the tail under either opening he desires. Table should be of hard wood, and nailed or screwed to top of rail as shewn in drawing "C." Cross can be either hard or soft, but must be faced with tin or iron. The cross is made of l in. stuff, as it is thus a gauge for length of stump tail. Searing Iron I ft. 6 in. over all.
