Not illustrated. 1897 edition. Excerpt: ...the Lake of Bala, crosses the valley of the Alyn near Hope, and produces a complete break between the Carboniferous strata of Denbighshire and Flintshire. The length of the coal-field is about 18 miles, and it is about 4 miles in breadth at Wrexham. The coal-measures rest on the Millstone Grit, which rises in a high escarpment facing the west above the Vale of Llangollen, and they pass below the Permian and New Red Sandstone formations of the plain of Cheshire towards the east. They contain several valuable seams of coal worked in deep collieries, one of which at Hafod near Ruabon, has a depth of 500 yards; the coal finds its way to market through the Great Western Railway and its branches. Resources. 1. Area of the visible coal-field.. 47 square miles. 2. Number of workable seams of 2 feet and upwards, 7; giving a total thick-ness of 30 feet of coal. 3. Quantity of coal remaining unworked to a depth of 4000 feet (1870) f. 1,287,000,000 tons. 4. Deduct quantity worked from 1870 to 1895, about 20,000,000 5.
