The spines on neglected fruit trees are often caused, or at least increased in number, by drought, and the same is true of the hairs upon the surface of hair-bearing plants. 229. A dry atmosphere favors the development of certain fungus parasites (000). B. BY EXCESSIVE MOISTURE., 230. Destruction of Roots by Water.--We saw (57) that land plants do not usually thrive with their roots immersed in water. The same is true if their roots are in a soil of which the interstices are filled with water, especially if the water is stagnant and contains dead organic matter. The latter, by decomposition, removes all the oxygen from the water, and replaces it with carbonic acid. The result is that the roots decay, and the plant sooner or later dies. Seeds planted under like conditions usually perish before germination. When this state of affairs occurs in the open ground the remedy is drainage. But it often occurs in potted plants as the result of a too compact soil or too copious watering. The expert recognizes this condition by a sour odor of the soil, by lifting the pot, or by tapping the pot with his knuckle. The remedy is to repot the plant in fresh soil in a proper condition of moisture, providing abundant drainage at the bottom of the pot. 231.
