About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1893. I wonder what the grand old man would say to-day if he could see the horde of venal and villanous scribblers, assassins of decency, piling high the book-stands with the productions of their vile minds and viler pens. From a vocation or art literature has passed through the stage of a profession, till with many it has sunk to the low level of a trade. Though neither a divinity nor a drudge--converse errors closely connected--literature has too often fal...
