About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1864. Excerpt: ... THE SEED GROWING. CHAPTER L BENNIE MEAD. We must go back a little in our story. A few weeks previous to Mr. Clifford's moving out of town, as Frank was passing through Essex street on his return from school, he observed quite a number of boys cheering, and apparently urging on two other boys in fighting. The cries, "Hit him, Tom."--"Go it, Bennie."--" Good for you, white head"--" You're done for now," and such like slang expressions, fell in harsh accents upon his ear. He was just crossing the street to avoid the unruly set, when a sudden movement among the crowd to give the fighters more room, enclosed him in the circle, and revealed to him the combatants. The one nearest to him was a thick-set, coarse-featured, savage-looking boy, about fifteen years old, his face darkened by an ugly scowl, made more intense by a deep, fresh scar across his forehead, probably the marks of a recent fight. He was evidently one of that worst of all class of boys, a boy-bully. The other combatant was a pale, half-starved, ragged little urchin of some ten or eleven years. Though much smaller than his assailant, he evidently had plenty of what boys call 'pluck.' He was in no wise daunted by the hard blows or still harder threats of big bully; but went into the fight, one might say, all over, with feet, head, hands, and teeth, little regarding how he fought, so he only gained the advantage. The big boy, or Tom Ryan as the boys called him, was evidently losing ground, being somewhat puzzled how to defend himself against the quick, agile movements of his opponent. He probably would have conquered easily in a regular fist-tofist encounter; but this biting, kicking, scratching way of fighting was something new in his experience, requiring his best efforts merely to defend himself....
